Can you run portfolio ops on Claude?

Funds are running more of their workflows with general-purpose AI tools (most commonly, Claude) every day. It raises the question: Do you actually need a dedicated software at all? Can you build high-quality, scalable workflows on Claude alone?
In the context of Portfolio Ops, Claude can replace the analysis layer and even the UI, but not the data platform. Here's our argument:
Portfolio analysis is fundamentally a two-part problem, and Claude is really good at Problem 2.

Claude needs a managed data layer
For Claude to perform, Problem 1 has to be solved first. Claude fails as a data layer there in three ways:
Context window limits
Low extraction accuracy
Unstandardized metrics across the portfolio
We've built PortfolioIQ to solve exactly these three issues.
Context window limits
The problem: Claude's context window can't support hundreds of documents. Dump all your board decks, founder updates, and financial statements directly into the model, and it simply stalls out or degrades.
This limits Claude use cases to single-company analysis - e.g. plotting a growth curve for Company X, rather than plotting growth against gross margin across your entire portfolio.
The fix: PortfolioIQ ingests and stores every document your fund receives. Numbers from board decks, founder updates, and financials land in a centralized database where every number is verified, versioned, and mapped directly back to its exact source document.

PortfolioIQ converts documents into a database, with every number traceable to its source.
Low extraction accuracy
The problem: Forget hundreds of documents for a second, AI extraction sucks for even a single document. Units get dropped, time periods confused and numbers from challenging visuals are ignored.
We benchmarked AI extraction across hundreds of complex financial documents using popular models and our own fine-tuned extraction pipeline. Out-of-the-box LLMs are far from accurate. Even with our fine-tuning and extensive rulesets, accuracy tops out at ~85%. In fund management, an 85% accuracy rate is a non-starter.

No LLM, not even our fine-tuned version, can extract metrics from financial docs reliably.
The fix: PortfolioIQ captures exact values, units, and time periods for every metric. Vision models are used for reading charts and complex visuals and every value is checked against hundreds of rules automatically. And then numbers are verified by a human analyst. That's what it takes.
To bridge the remaining 15% that pure software cannot solve, PortfolioIQ's team of qualified financial analysts verifies every single number and handles edge cases before anything enters your database. That's how your data reaches 100% accuracy.

LLMs can't handle these fairly common, but complex representations. PortfolioIQ can.
Unstandardized metrics across the portfolio
The problem: Even if extraction were perfectly accurate, the numbers still aren't usable. Every portfolio company reports under its own metric names ("Net Revenue" vs. "ARR"), fiscal calendars, and currencies. On top of that, conflicting updates across different sources often state different numbers for the exact same metric. Unless you standardize, you can't really get true insights from the data.
The fix: PortfolioIQ maps disparate company metrics to your fund's shared definitions, aligns fiscal calendars, normalizes currencies, and reconciles conflicting values across documents.

PortfolioIQ puts every company on the same metrics, periods, and currency in a single view.
Connect verified data straight to Claude
Once PortfolioIQ extracts and standardizes your data, the Claude MCP Connector hands Claude the exact job it's good at: analysis and reporting.
Your data in PortfolioIQ is verified, standardized, and structured. Through the connector, Claude gets secure access to every metric your fund has ever captured - with zero manual uploads, unlimited context, and zero hallucinated numbers.
You can do a lot more with single prompts:
Graph ARR trends over eight trailing quarters across your portfolio.
Compare burn rates and runway across your Series B+ cohort in seconds.
Build valuation models or first-cut LP reports backed by source-verified figures.
Claude is the best reasoning engine available. PortfolioIQ is the best data layer. Connect the two, and feel the magic.
